Matt Smith, fondly known as “Smitty,” was the beloved Athletic Director at Saint Mark’s in Delaware, remembered for his unwavering dedication to faith, family, education, and athletics. Born on June 25, 1968, Matt went home to God on September 6, 2025, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the lives of generations of students and athletes.

    What Happened

Matt’s professional journey was a testament to his passion and commitment. After graduating from St. Elizabeth’s High School and Ursinus College, Matt joined Saint Mark’s in 1992 as a teacher and coach. His leadership as the head baseball coach was instrumental in the Spartans’ success, capturing ten state championships, starting with the 1999 victory. In 2011, Matt transitioned into the role of Athletic Director, shaping the school’s sports programs with vision, care, and integrity.

His dedication to athletics was widely recognized, culminating in accolades such as being named Delaware’s Greatest High School Baseball Coach in 2021 and his well-deserved induction into the Delaware Athletic Hall of Fame in 2025.

    Reactions

Matt’s achievements, however, went far beyond his coaching and professional accomplishments. He was a mentor, role model, and a steady presence to all who knew him. His ability to inspire confidence, perseverance, and a strong sense of community among athletes, students, and colleagues was unparalleled. His leadership extended beyond the sports field, including his involvement with Spartan Summer Camps and contributions to Delaware athletics through his work with the DIAA.

Matt was also a devoted husband to his wife, Amy, with whom he celebrated 25 years of marriage, and a proud father to Olivia ’19 and Ryan ’23. His devotion to family, faith, and friends made him a cherished member of his community. He will be remembered for his kindness, faith, and loyalty, which left an indelible mark on everyone he touched.

    What’s Next

Matt Smith’s passing leaves a profound void in the hearts of his family, the Saint Mark’s community, and all those who were fortunate enough to know him. While his physical presence is no longer with us, his spirit, dedication, and love continue to inspire and guide those he mentored and influenced throughout his life. Matt’s legacy of service, integrity, and community will live on, and his memory will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of all who were touched by his life.

This is a developing story. We will update this article as more information becomes available.
