Venice Cracks Down on Troublemaking Tourists in Canal Swim Incident

In the picturesque city of Venice, a couple’s seemingly harmless swim in the Grand Canal has become the latest example of tourists pushing the limits of acceptable behavior. The British pair, who were caught celebrating the end of their holiday with a swim in the famous canal, faced steep fines and a 48-hour ban from the city.

    What Happened

The incident took place when the couple, eager to cool off on a hot Venetian day, jumped into the Grand Canal for a swim. Venice, renowned for its beauty and historical significance, has made it clear that such activities are strictly prohibited. As a result, local authorities promptly fined the tourists €450 each, sending a strong message about the city’s commitment to protecting its cultural and natural heritage. On top of the fine, they were banned from Venice for 48 hours, effectively cutting their holiday short.

The couple’s actions were not an isolated case in Venice, which has seen a rise in such disruptive tourist behavior. The campaign group Venezia NON è Disneyland has been advocating for harsher penalties for disrespectful tourists and pushing for permanent bans, arguing that higher fines are necessary to deter misbehavior in the city.

    Who Was Behind This Movement?

Venezia NON è Disneyland, a grassroots campaign group, has been actively calling for stricter rules to protect Venice from the consequences of unchecked tourism. The group believes that the increasing number of tourists engaging in irresponsible and even dangerous behaviors is detrimental to the city. Their message? Venice must be defended from tourists who fail to respect its cultural and environmental integrity.

    Tourism Impact and Reactions

Though tourism is a significant economic driver for Venice, it has also come with considerable challenges. With up to 60,000 visitors per day, the city’s population swells to nearly twice its normal size, leading to overcrowding, damage to historic sites, and, as seen with the canal incident, behavior that locals and officials find unacceptable.

Local Venetians and advocates are growing frustrated with the disruptive impact tourism is having. “Tourism is important, but Venice must be defended from those who would disrespect it,” said a local spokesperson. Meanwhile, others express frustration with the current situation. “Get out of that canal! Disneyland is NOT Venice!” one local resident quipped.

    Government Actions

In response to increasing incidents like the canal swimming, authorities have ramped up enforcement. In 2023 alone, officials issued over 1,000 expulsion orders for various infractions, ranging from littering to sunbathing in front of historic sites. To curb overcrowding, the city has also introduced a tourist tax of €5 on the busiest days of the year, which doubles for last-minute bookings.

Despite these efforts, however, maintaining control over the massive number of daily visitors remains a challenge. In a city where tourists often outnumber the local population, finding a balance between welcoming visitors and preserving Venice’s unique charm remains an ongoing struggle.
