The Sheffield community is mourning the loss of Ernest Hall, a respected former engineer remembered by family and friends as a “true gentleman.” He passed away peacefully at the age of 82, just months after moving back to his hometown from Cornwall, where he had lived for over a decade.

    Early Life and Family

Born on Christmas Eve, 1942, at Brook Hill near the old Jessop Hospital, Ernest was one of seven siblings — growing up with four sisters and two brothers.

In 1965, he married his lifelong partner Joyce, with whom he recently celebrated a milestone diamond wedding anniversary, marking 60 years of marriage. Together, they raised three children: daughter Deborah and twin sons Gary and Sean — all born within the same year.

Family was at the center of Ernest’s world. He was a devoted grandfather to five grandchildren: Elliot David, Rebecca Jade, William Sean, Dominic Gary, and Emma Louise, each of whom he cherished deeply.

    Career and Work Ethic

Ernest spent much of his professional life in engineering, first working as a surface grinder before retraining as a saw doctor. He retired in 2007 from Tyzack’s on Shepcote Lane, continuing a long-standing legacy of skilled trade and craftsmanship carried on from his previous employers. His colleagues remembered him for his dedication and professionalism.

    Hobbies and Interests

Away from work, Ernest embraced a wide range of hobbies. He enjoyed fishing, metal detecting, and short mat bowling, pursuits that brought him both relaxation and camaraderie. In his younger years, he and Joyce also shared a love of sequence and ballroom dancing, which gave them a rich and lively social life.

    Remembered With Love

His wife Joyce shared touching words about his character:
“A lot of his friends described him as a gentleman and a nice man. He was always helpful and friendly. As a husband, he always worked hard and was supportive.”

    A Lasting Legacy

Ernest Hall’s life was defined by his commitment to family, strong work ethic, and warm-hearted nature. To those who knew him, he leaves behind not only cherished memories but also a legacy of love, respect, and kindness that will endure through generations.
