On Thursday, September 18, 2025, first responders were called to an area near 24000 block of West Main Street in Barstow after reports that a car had been swept away by floodwaters. Investigators say 26-year-old Brandon Padilla-Aguilera and his 2-year-old son, Xavier, were in their vehicle when they attempted to cross a flooded section of West Main Street, between Lenwood Road and Sweeten Lane.
The floodwaters swept the vehicle off the road, and both father and son were separated from the car and from each other as they were carried away. While Padilla-Aguilera was found later and taken to a hospital, his son Xavier was missing. Authorities launched an extensive search, and the toddler’s body was discovered the following afternoon in the San Bernardino County Flood Control channel south of the Mojave River.
