Airlink Suspends Flights Between Johannesburg and Maseru Due to Safety Concerns

Johannesburg, South Africa – November 5, 2025 – Airlink, the South African airline, has announced the suspension of its daily flights between Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport and Maseru’s Moshoeshoe International Airport in Lesotho, citing safety concerns related to the lack of serviceable fire and rescue equipment at the Lesotho airport.

    What Happened

In a statement released on Thursday, Airlink explained that it had temporarily halted its flights due to the airport operator’s failure to maintain the regulated emergency response capabilities required for flight operations. Specifically, the airline noted that Moshoeshoe International Airport was unable to provide the necessary fire and rescue services, which is essential for the safe operation of commercial flights.

    Service Resumption

Airlink emphasized that it would only resume services once Moshoeshoe International Airport has restored its emergency response capabilities to meet the necessary safety standards. The airline has advised customers who are scheduled to travel to check with Airlink or their travel agents for the status of their flights, starting from Thursday.

    Impact on Travelers

The suspension of flights is expected to affect both business and leisure travelers, as the Johannesburg-Maseru route is a key link for those traveling between South Africa and Lesotho. Passengers are encouraged to stay in close contact with Airlink or their respective travel agents to make alternative arrangements if needed.

    Closing

Airlink’s decision to suspend flights underscores the airline’s commitment to ensuring the safety of its passengers. The airline has assured travelers that it is closely monitoring the situation at Moshoeshoe International Airport and will resume services as soon as the necessary safety measures are reinstated.
