NEW ORLEANS, LA — A devastating family incident in New Orleans has led to the tragic death of Dr. Samuel Eweni, a respected professor at Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO), and the hospitalization of two of his daughters. The incident, which took place on Tuesday evening, has shocked the local community, and Dr. Eweni’s son, Chukwuebuka Eweni, is now in custody facing charges of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder.

What Happened: A Family Tragedy Unfolds

The tragic event unfolded on the evening of Tuesday, November 11, 2025, at the Eweni family home on Pebble Drive in New Orleans. According to reports from family members and authorities, the night started out as any other until Chukwuebuka Eweni allegedly attacked his father, Dr. Samuel Eweni, and two of his sisters with a knife.

Despite the swift response of emergency services, Dr. Eweni was declared deceased at the scene, and his two daughters were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. One daughter has been released, while the other remains hospitalized but is expected to recover.

    Who Was Dr. Samuel Eweni?

Dr. Samuel Eweni, 54, was a well-respected faculty member at Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO), where he taught in the College of Business and Public Administration. Known for his passion for education, Dr. Eweni was not just a professor but a mentor to many students, dedicating his life to shaping young minds and contributing to his community.

In a statement, SUNO Chancellor Dr. Joseph Bouie, Jr. expressed his deep sorrow, saying:

“Dr. Eweni was not just an instructor; he served as a mentor and a beacon of hope for many of our students. His impact on the university’s goal of changing lives through education will be honored and remembered. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and colleagues during this extremely challenging period.”

Details of the Incident and Investigation

The incident occurred when Chukwuebuka Eweni, 27, reportedly attacked his father and two sisters at their home. Witnesses describe the attack as completely unexpected, with no previous signs of violence from Chukwuebuka. Family members shared that he had struggled with mental health issues for some time but had never exhibited violent tendencies prior to this event.

After the assault, Chukwuebuka reportedly went to a mental health facility in New Orleans East, where he had received treatment in the past. Unaware of the unfolding situation, hospital personnel transferred him to another facility in Jefferson Parish, where he was eventually located by law enforcement and taken into custody on Wednesday morning.

The New Orleans Police Department, along with other law enforcement agencies, are investigating the circumstances surrounding the stabbing. They are gathering evidence and speaking to witnesses to fully understand the sequence of events.

    Community Reactions and Support

The news of Dr. Eweni’s tragic passing has deeply affected the SUNO community and those who knew him. Students and faculty members have expressed their shock and grief over the loss of a man they described as kind, intelligent, and deeply committed to his students.

A former student shared their thoughts, saying:

“Dr. Eweni was more than just a professor—he cared about us as people. He always found time to listen, to mentor, and to encourage us. His death is a huge loss not only to his family but to everyone he touched through education.”

Locals in New Orleans have also expressed their sorrow and sympathy for the Eweni family, with many sending their thoughts and prayers for strength during this unimaginable time.

    What Happens Next: Investigation Continues

As the investigation continues, law enforcement is focusing on understanding the root causes behind the incident. Authorities have confirmed that Chukwuebuka Eweni is facing charges of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder in connection with his father’s death and the injuries sustained by his sisters.

Mental health experts are being consulted as part of the investigation into potential factors leading to the tragic attack. Law enforcement has reiterated the importance of mental health awareness and support in preventing such heartbreaking incidents.

    Funeral and Memorial Plans

Details regarding the memorial service for Dr. Samuel Eweni have not yet been released. Family and friends are expected to come together to celebrate his life and honor the impact he made through his career and personal relationships.

The community is encouraged to offer their support to the grieving family during this difficult time, remembering Dr. Eweni’s contributions to education and his legacy of mentorship.
