TEQUESTA, FL — Harry Chandler, a U.S. Navy veteran and one of the last remaining survivors of the attack on Pearl Harbor, has passed away at the age of 103 on December 30, 2024, at a senior living center in Tequesta, Florida. Chandler’s life was marked by extraordinary courage and service during World War II, particularly on December 7, 1941, when the U.S. was thrust into war by the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor.

    What Happened

Harry Chandler’s remarkable journey began in Holyoke, Massachusetts, where, as a young boy during the Great Depression, he dreamed of becoming a sailor. Despite financial struggles, Chandler joined the U.S. Navy shortly after graduating high school, eager to serve his country. He enlisted just before his 18th birthday and became a medic stationed at Pearl Harbor.

On the morning of December 7, 1941, Chandler was raising the U.S. flag at a mobile hospital at Aiea Heights when the Japanese attack began. From his vantage point, he saw the bombings of the USS Arizona, USS Oklahoma, and USS Nevada, and immediately recognized the planes dropping bombs as Japanese. Without hesitation, he rushed to aid the wounded sailors, pulling them from the water and washing oil from their bodies. In his own words, he was so busy helping that he didn’t have time to be afraid. His actions that day exemplified his selflessness and courage.

    Who Was Harry Chandler

Born in Holyoke, Massachusetts, Harry Chandler was driven by a sense of duty and compassion from a young age. After surviving Pearl Harbor, he continued his service in the U.S. Navy Reserve for decades, eventually retiring in 1981. He co-owned an upholstery business and lived a long, active life committed to helping others.

Unlike some Pearl Harbor survivors, Chandler did not attend many memorial events over the years. However, he returned to Pearl Harbor twice, with his most recent visit in December 2023 to commemorate the 82nd anniversary of the attack. During the event, he was honored alongside four other surviving veterans, and they participated in a parade to recognize their bravery and service.

    Career, Legacy, and Contributions

Harry Chandler’s legacy goes beyond his service in the Navy. He was known for his continued involvement in his community and his commitment to helping others. He spent his long life staying active, keeping his mind sharp, and offering assistance to anyone in need.

In an interview with CBS 12 News in April 2024, Chandler was asked about the secret to his long life, and he humbly credited his dedication to staying active and helping people. “Just stay active. Keep my mind going… help people. That’s the main thing. That’s what I do all the time. If I find someone who needs help, I help them,” he said.

    Public and Social Media Reactions

News of Chandler’s passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes on social media from fellow veterans, Pearl Harbor survivors, and members of the broader community who recognized his impact. Many people have shared stories about his acts of kindness and his unassuming nature. In honor of his passing, local officials and organizations have expressed their gratitude for Chandler’s service and his role in history.

One tribute read, “A true hero who embodied the spirit of resilience, courage, and generosity. Rest in peace, Harry Chandler, and thank you for your service.” Others echoed similar sentiments, reflecting on the profound influence he had on those around him.

Official Statements and What Happens Next

Harry Chandler’s passing marks the end of an era for those who survived the Pearl Harbor attack. His family and friends are mourning his loss, while his legacy as a hero who exemplified the values of selflessness and bravery lives on. Funeral arrangements and memorial services will be made public in the coming days.

Chandler’s life is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by those who served in World War II and the importance of remembering their stories. His death is a loss not just for his family but for a community that has been shaped by the generations of men and women who served in the war.

    Closing Line
