Greensboro Apartment Manager Kimberly Jennings Charged After Assaulting Children at Pool; Civil Rights Lawsuit Filed

GREENSBORO, N.C. — A disturbing confrontation at Sedgefield Garden Apartments in early August 2023 has sparked criminal charges, national outrage, and a federal civil-rights lawsuit after apartment manager Kimberly Jennings, 62, was caught on video assaulting two Black children at the property’s pool.

What Happened at the Sedgefield Garden Apartments Pool

According to the Greensboro Police Department, the incident occurred when an 11-year-old boy and his 8-year-old sister were at the apartment complex pool as guests of a resident. Jennings confronted the children, telling them the pool was reserved for residents only.

A cellphone video recorded during the altercation — and later widely circulated online — shows Jennings pouring soda over the boy’s head and then striking him in the face with the bottle. The video also includes allegations that the girl’s hair was pulled and that racial slurs were used, though not all portions are clearly visible.

Police responded on August 3 and launched an assault investigation.

    Arrest and Criminal Charges

On August 4, 2023, Kimberly Jennings was arrested and charged with two counts of Simple Assault on a Child Under 12.

In a later media interview, Jennings admitted to physically confronting the children:

“I had a soda in my hand, and I tossed it on him, and then I popped him… I did, I admit I did, and it was wrong.”

Jennings claimed the boy had been “mouthy” and that she had asked him repeatedly not to return to the pool — but acknowledged her reaction was inappropriate.

Civil Rights Lawsuit Filed by the Children’s Family

The children’s parents filed a federal civil-rights lawsuit naming Jennings, the apartment complex, and its affiliated management companies. The lawsuit alleges:

    • Assault and battery

    • Racial discrimination

    • Intentional infliction of emotional distress

    • Negligent supervision by management

    • Violations of federal civil-rights protections

The family’s attorney stated the incident reflects “a painful and familiar pattern of discrimination and mistreatment of Black children in America.”

    Community and Media Reaction

The incident drew national attention after the video went viral. Community members and advocacy groups voiced outrage over both the physical assault and the alleged racist language.

    Key concerns raised include:

    • Racial bias in enforcement of pool rules

    • Safety of children in shared residential spaces

    • Authority figures using force instead of proper procedures

    • Need for training for property management staff

Local and national news outlets highlighted the emotional impact the assault had on the children and the broader racial dynamics involved.

Broader Issues and Significance of the Case

This case underscores larger societal issues, including:

    Power and Authority

A property manager, acting as an authority figure, used physical force against minors — raising questions about oversight and training.

    Race and Access

The children, both Black, were accused of violating pool rules despite being guests — prompting scrutiny of whether policies were applied fairly.

    Video Evidence and Accountability

The viral recording played a major role in prompting swift legal action and shaping public understanding of the incident.

    Child Safety

The confrontation occurred in a recreational setting meant to be safe for children, highlighting gaps in protective oversight.

    What Happens Next

    Criminal Case

Jennings still faces prosecution for the assault charges. The outcome could include fines, probation, or additional penalties.

    Civil Litigation

The lawsuit filed by the family remains active. Findings could influence:

    • Apartment-complex policies

    • Staff training requirements

    • Anti-discrimination enforcement

    • Liability standards for property-management companies

    Policy and Community Response

Apartment complexes across Greensboro — and nationwide — may revisit guest policies, complaint-handling procedures, and employee conduct expectations.

    Support for the Children

Community organizations have expressed support for the family as they navigate both public attention and emotional fallout.

The Kimberly Jennings Greensboro pool incident continues to resonate far beyond a single confrontation. As the criminal and civil cases move forward, the outcome may shape how residential communities address racial equity, children’s safety, and accountability for those in positions of authority.
