Woman Seriously Injured After Being Struck While Crossing Montezuma Road Near SDSU

A Thursday evening near San Diego State University took a devastating turn when a 26-year-old woman was struck by a vehicle while crossing Montezuma Road in the College Area. The crash, which occurred around 5:20 p.m. on December 12, has left the woman hospitalized with multiple serious injuries and has renewed concerns about pedestrian safety in one of San Diego’s busiest university corridors.

    What Happened

According to authorities, the collision happened in the 6500 block of Montezuma Road as the woman attempted to cross the street. An eastbound Honda Accord traveling in the far-left lane struck her, sending shockwaves through the busy area near campus.

Emergency crews responded quickly, and the woman was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. The driver, a 28-year-old man, remained at the scene and was not injured.

    Injuries and Medical Condition

Doctors confirmed the pedestrian suffered significant but non-life-threatening injuries, including:

    • A head laceration
    • A broken pelvis
    • A fractured femur
    • A fractured sacrum

While officials say her injuries are not life-threatening, they are severe and likely to require extensive medical care, rehabilitation, and a lengthy recovery process. Pelvic and femur fractures are among the most painful and mobility-limiting injuries, often involving months of treatment and physical therapy.

    Community Impact and Safety Concerns

The crash has deeply affected the SDSU community and nearby residents. Montezuma Road is a major thoroughfare for students, faculty, and local drivers, particularly during evening hours when foot traffic is heavy.

Witnesses described the sudden shift from a normal weekday atmosphere to chaos as emergency lights filled the street and traffic was disrupted. The incident has once again raised concerns about pedestrian vulnerability in high-traffic university areas.

    Investigation Underway

San Diego police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash, including traffic conditions, visibility, and whether speed or other factors played a role. No arrests or citations have been announced at this time.

Authorities have not released the identity of the injured woman.

    Looking Ahead

As the investigation continues, the focus now turns to the injured woman’s recovery and broader discussions about road safety near SDSU. Community members and safety advocates are urging drivers and pedestrians alike to remain vigilant, especially in areas where students frequently cross busy streets.

The physical evidence may have been cleared from Montezuma Road, but the impact of Thursday’s crash remains—felt by witnesses, the university community, and most of all, a young woman now facing a long and painful path to healing.
