King Charles III Says Cancer Treatment Will Be Reduced in 2026, Urges Early Screening in Video Message

King Charles III announced Friday that his cancer treatment schedule will be reduced in the new year, citing the benefits of early diagnosis and timely medical care. The monarch shared the update in a pre-recorded video message released on December 13, 2025, encouraging the public to prioritize cancer screenings and early detection.

The message was broadcast as part of Channel 4 and Cancer Research UK’s “Stand Up To Cancer” night, marking a rare and personal reflection from the king on his ongoing health journey.

    What Happened

In the video message, King Charles III revealed that because his cancer was detected early, his treatment plan has progressed positively enough to allow doctors to scale back his schedule in 2026.

“Thanks to early diagnosis and treatment, my own schedule of cancer treatment can be reduced in the New Year,” the king said, adding that it has allowed him to continue leading “a full and active life” even while undergoing treatment.

The address aired ahead of a live broadcast from Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, hosted by Davina McCall.

Who Is King Charles III / Background

King Charles III, 76, ascended the throne in 2022 and has continued carrying out public duties while undergoing cancer treatment. In February 2024, Buckingham Palace announced that the king had undergone a procedure for benign prostate enlargement. Subsequent tests identified “a form of cancer,” though the palace has not disclosed the specific type.

Despite his diagnosis, Charles has remained active and has increasingly used his platform to raise awareness about cancer care and prevention.

Cancer Journey and Key Message on Early Detection

In his address, the king spoke candidly about how overwhelming a cancer diagnosis can feel, drawing from his own experience. He stressed that early detection is critical, calling it “the key that can transform treatment journeys.”

He highlighted alarming national data, noting that at least 9 million people in the UK are not up to date with recommended cancer screenings.

“The statistics speak with stark clarity,” Charles said. “For bowel cancer caught at the earliest stage, approximately nine in ten people survive for at least five years. When diagnosed late, that falls to just one in ten.”

He described the reduction in his treatment as a “milestone,” both personally and medically, and said he hopes his experience offers encouragement to others.

    Public and Health Community Reactions

The king praised what he called the “community of care” surrounding cancer patients, including doctors, nurses, researchers, and volunteers. His remarks resonated widely, with health advocates applauding his openness and continued push for public awareness.

The message also underscored the emotional and practical toll cancer takes not just on patients, but on families and caregivers across the UK.

Official Statements or What Happens Next

As part of his call to action, King Charles highlighted the UK’s new national cancer screening checker, an online tool that helps individuals determine which screenings they are eligible for.

“As I have observed before, the darkest moments of illness can be illuminated by the greatest compassion,” he said. “But compassion must be paired with action.”

The king urged people to make early cancer screening part of their New Year resolutions, emphasizing that lives depend on it.

Charles and Queen Camilla have continued to support cancer research initiatives throughout 2025. Earlier this year, they hosted a reception at Buckingham Palace to thank researchers and healthcare workers for their efforts in early diagnosis and treatment.

His message comes as the royal family has faced multiple cancer battles, including Kate, the Princess of Wales, who announced earlier this year that her cancer is now in remission.
