The Essex Junction community is reeling after the tragic death of 18-year-old Mark Omand, who passed away in a two-car collision on the Burlington Beltline on Wednesday evening.
Mark, who his mother revealed was in the process of changing his name to Marcus Villa, was described by family and friends as a vibrant and kindhearted young man with a bright future ahead of him.
The crash occurred around 5:30 p.m., just south of the North Avenue interchange. According to police reports, Mark’s car veered across the median, colliding with a Jeep driven by 45-year-old Derek Lorrain of Burlington. The impact was severe, requiring firefighters to extract Derek from his vehicle before he was transported to a local hospital. His condition remains unknown at this time.
Mark’s mother, Christie Villa, spoke through tears about her son’s compassionate nature and boundless energy. “He was literally the sweetest kid ever,” she said. “He would do anything for anybody. He was just silly with driving, and kids are supposed to make mistakes, but not die from them.” Christie’s grief is shared by many in the Essex Junction community, where Mark was known for his friendly demeanor and positive outlook on life.
Mark was set to graduate this spring, a milestone that now serves as a painful reminder of his unfulfilled potential. His death has left a void not only in his family but also among his classmates and teachers in the Essex School District. School officials have stepped up to offer grief counseling services to students grappling with the sudden loss of their peer. “This is a difficult time for everyone, and we encourage our students to lean on each other and take advantage of the resources available,” a district spokesperson said.
The crash also had broader ramifications, including a brief power outage in Burlington’s New North End. Burlington Electric confirmed that the incident disrupted power lines in the area, though service was quickly restored.
Community members have come together to support Mark’s family during this challenging time. Friends, neighbors, and even strangers have shared messages of condolence and fond memories of the young man who left an indelible mark on their lives. “He had such a bright smile,” one family friend commented. “It’s hard to believe he’s gone.”
